Corporate Citizenship at AIG Japan

AIG places importance on strengthening communities through volunteerism and provides various opportunities for employees to use their time to volunteer. AIG employees are eligible for the Volunteer Time Off program, which provides all employees with dedicated paid time off to volunteer with non-profit organizations. In addition, every April AIG hosts Global Volunteer Month where colleagues come together and demonstrate their commitment to volunteerism.

How we give back

AIG Japan partners with Junior Achievement Japan, the Japan arm of Junior Achievement Worldwide, an organisation that promotes education and financial literacy for children around the world through various experiential programs.

Throughout the year, colleagues volunteer to participate in programs run by Junior Achievement Japan across various age ranges from elementary school to middle school and high school. Previous activities have included volunteering at schools not only in Tokyo and Osaka, but also in regional areas such as Sendai, Fukuoka and Sapporo.

AIG General sponsors the AIG High School Diplomats Program, a program which promotes cultural exchange between Japanese and American high school students. This program was established as part of AIG General’s corporate responsibility activities and has been running for more than 30 years with the aim of fostering future leaders.

This program consists of two parts; the U.S. program, which began in 1987 and consists of high school students selected from across Japan who visit the East Coast of the U.S., and the Japan program, which began in 1994 and consists of American high school students who are selected to visit Japan. More than 4,000 high school students combined from Japan and the U.S. have participated.

With both the U.S. and Japan programs, Japanese and American high school students spend approximately 10 days together, a time where the students get to know one another and learn about each other’s cultures and interests. Through these 10 days participating students have the opportunity to create a life-long network and develop their goals and vision for the future.

AIG General has supported the Anti-Bullying Slogan Contest since the contest was first held in 2007. The aim of the contest is to create opportunities for students to consider the issue of bullying and contribute to promoting positivity and fulfilment by preventing bullying.

Each year elementary and junior high-school students submit slogans to the Anti-Bullying Slogan Contest – winners are selected from approximately 400,000 submissions.

AIG has been supporting the efforts of the Morino Project as part of our efforts for disaster prevention and mitigation. The Morino Project aims to create forests to protect lives and we have engaged in numerous activities with the public interest incorporated foundation operating the Morino Project, with over 2,800 volunteers participating in 26 tree-planting activities across nine areas in Japan.

The Morino Project’s forests to protect lives initiative includes collecting acorns, growing them into seedlings and planting them in disaster-prone areas such as those impacted by the Great East Japan Earthquake and areas where future tsunamis are predicted.

Lives are being lost around the world to preventable infectious diseases such as polio, measles, tetanus, diphtheria, whooping cough and tuberculosis – many of these lives could be saved through vaccination. AIG General supports the Japan Committee, Vaccines for the World’s Children – with every new medical insurance contract, AIG General donates three vaccine doses. The donation of vaccines is an important measure to support the children of the future.

AIG in Japan also supports various other initiatives throughout the year including clean-ups and children-oriented events organized by the United Service Organization (USO). In addition, AIG volunteers support schools for students with disabilities by helping to run events such as sports days or providing after-school support.
